  1. Definition:

    • The ASCD value is a threshold set by the BMS, indicating the current level at which the short-circuit protection circuit will activate. It is a trigger point, and once the current reaches or exceeds this value, the BMS will activate its protection mechanism.

    • Short circuit current refers to the current that can potentially flow through the battery pack during a short circuit, reflecting the behavior of the battery itself under short-circuit conditions, and it does not necessarily align with the BMS’s set threshold.

  2. Function:

    • The ASCD value is a safety design standard used to prevent overcurrent damage to the battery. It sets a reasonable trigger point to prevent excessive current from damaging the battery during a short circuit.

    • Short circuit current is the actual current that may occur during a short circuit event, which can be much higher than the ASCD value. Therefore, the response time and capability of the protection circuit are critical.

  3. Numerical Difference:

    • The ASCD value is typically set as a pre-determined current value in normal operation, usually ranging from a few amperes to tens of amperes, depending on the battery pack's design and requirements.

    • Short circuit current can be extremely high, potentially reaching several tens or even hundreds of times the battery's maximum discharge current, depending on factors like the battery voltage, internal resistance, and other factors.

Summary:

  • The ASCD value is the trigger point for the short-circuit protection circuit, ensuring that when a short circuit occurs in the battery pack, the BMS quickly disconnects the current to protect the battery.

  • Short circuit current refers to the actual current that may flow within the battery pack during a short circuit, which is typically much larger and requires the BMS to react rapidly to avoid severe consequences.

The relationship between the two is: the ASCD value is a set threshold used by the BMS to prevent overcurrent damage, while the short-circuit current is the actual current inside the battery pack during a short circuit, which is usually much higher than the ASCD value.
